Maine Discovery Museum is proud to be one of three museums around the country as part of this new, groundbreaking two-year initiative funded by the Simons Foundation in partnership with the Franklin Institute: Meaningful Math: Museum and Community Partnerships. This program brings together museums, math experts, and community-based organizations in four unique locations across the country to co-create unique opportunities for math engagement that highlights the beauty of math, fosters curiosity, and elevates mathematical thinking and is community led.
MDM, along with North Dakota’s Gateway to Science, the Arizona Science Center, and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, will be creating engaging, real-world mathematics experiences for learners of all ages. Director of Education Trudi Plummer is heading up MDM’s Meaningful Math project, and notes, “I couldn’t be prouder to be included in this small, extraordinary and renowned group of STEM education providers. It validates all our years of work at the Maine Discovery Museum to become a true science hub, reach out and grow beyond our four walls, build strong community partnerships, and establish ourselves as equals in science education on a national level.”
MDM will work with the Franklin Institute and the other partner museums to develop creative, research-backed approaches to math education in community settings. Over the next two years, the museum will co-create new experiences designed to highlight the beauty of mathematics, spark curiosity and confidence in mathematics, and implement pilot products to reach students, families, and educators in Maine.
