Storm Drain Art Contest

What is the Storm Drain Art Contest?

As an extension of our River in Our Backyard exhibit, MDM, in collaboration with Bangor Area Stormwater Group, is launching a contest for local children to design a mural to be painted on the sidewalk around the storm drain in front of MDM on Main Street. The goal of the contest is to raise awareness of watershed health and inform the public about the connections between storm drains and the Penobscot River.

Why paint storm drains?

Pollutants such as litter, pet waste, chemicals, and sediment are washed into storm drains and end up directly in the Penobscot River and other bodies of water, disrupting the sensitive aquatic ecosystems. The storm drain mural serves to beautify Downtown and raise awareness of how we can all reduce the presence of litter and other pollutants in our waterways.
