  • Science Detectives: Science for Pre-Schoolers

    Maine Discovery Museum, 74 Main St, Bangor, ME 04401, USA

    We invite our pre-K age visitors with inquisitive minds to stop by our Tuesday morning mini-labs for
    fun and easy experiments and hands-on demonstrations: magnets, bubbles, ice, water, air, metal; even the greatest scientists started with simple experiments and observations. These special chemistry, engineering, and physics workshops are designed just right for the pre-school age child. 

    Each session starts with finding the science questions, the introduction of the tools and procedures followed by safety instructions. After about 10-20 minutes of guided inquiry the lab ends with 10-15 minute open exploration time and share-out of observations and discoveries.

    Recommended for children 3 - 5 years.

    Please note: Our Art Studio seats 15 children. If you find the room full when you arrive to do an activity, please circle back in 10-15 minutes.

    Budding naturalists and biologists can go on nature excursions without ever leaving the museum. Get up close to some of MDM’s amazing live animals, pelts, claws, shells, bones, rocks and more. Each session starts with an introduction of the specimen or natural science discovery followed by guided gentle exploration and lots of time for science conversations. Occasionally we will have appropriate make and take activities to end the session.

    Recommended for ages 3+ and free with admission.

    MY DAY TO PLAY AT MDM – A SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM
    Please join us for “My Day to Play,” a program designed to provide children on the autism spectrum with a safe, comfortable environment to explore and to give families who face similar challenges a place to connect. The program was developed by lead volunteer Rosalyn Fisher, a retired occupational therapist experienced in working with children on the spectrum, and MDM’s Director of Education, Trudi Plummer.
